War sucks for many reasons. One of those reasons is that it takes stuff and turns it into not-stuff. This collection of pictures gives some idea of what Warsaw looked like in 1947 and how surreal living in the city then must have been. Postwar Warsaw had two things going against it: it was absolutely destroyed in the war and communists oversaw the rebuilding effort. And yet the fact that the old town eventually emerged looking like it does – they rebuilt it to look like it had looked before the war – means that the communists at least deserve credit from something. I mean, they could have just thrown up prefabricated buildings everywhere. Thank Marx they didn’t.
